STEM Education and Capacity Building in Southern Maldives<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Foundation for Environment, Climate and Technology\u00a0(FECT) has carried out three climate related projects in the Maldives supported by the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Through these projects we have assembled useful data, scientific output, climate information related to water resources, disasters and related areas. We also partnered with a variety of organizations including the Small Island Research Centre (SIRC) and supported the establishment of FECT in Maldives (FECT-MV).<\/p>

Based on the suggestion of our NAS program manager, we proposed to support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning in the remote island schools. The project will be undertaken in the Fares-Maathoda and neighboring islands in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. This work is supported by the US National Academy of Sciences and USAID program in Sri Lanka and Maldives since July 2018 till September 2019.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Small Island Research Centre (SIRC)<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Small Island Research Centre (SIRC) is a Maldivian Research Institute with offices in Male and in the Fares-Maathoda islands. FECT has carried out weather and climate monitoring at SIRC Maathodaa. Under the PEER cycle 3 grant an automatic weather station was installed at Maathoda, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll near the equator and observations are available from October 2016.<\/p>

The Foundation for Environment, Climate and Technology (FECT) has carried out three PEER and other projects in the Maldives since 2009. The outputs from these projects shall be useful in Maldives as policy makers, resource managers and program managers seek to better incorporate climate information<\/p>

FECT-MV<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

FECT-MV is a registered organization in the Maldives, which was set up capitalizing on the work on FECT-Sri Lanka has undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Columbia University and other organizations which led to a unique capabilities in climate adaptation for Maldives.<\/p>

The staff affiliated with us and the networks of organizations possess expertise in the relevant fields of climate, water resources management, disaster risk management, energy conservation and management, and we are uniquely positioned to contribute to the successful implementation of the above project. Our vision is to make FECT-MV a repository of scientific expertise related to climate and environment and a driver of further research and development.<\/p>

PEER Program<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) is an international grants program that funds scientists and engineers in developing countries who partner with U.S. government-funded researchers to address global development challenges.<\/p>

The program is administered by the United States National Academy of the Sciences in collaboration with USAID. Through this program there have been 306 projects internationally since 2011 out of which 4 projects have been implemented for the Maldives through FECT and SIRC from the inception of the program. Two of the projects were supported by the USAID Mission for Sri Lanka and Maldives. The program managers for these projects are Dr. Dalal Najib (who has visited Maathoda) and Male and Mr. Daniel Placht. USAID officers who monitors the project is Ms. Nihani Riza.<\/p>
